Beginner · Lesson 8 of 8Building your first portfolio
Start with the boring foundations: an emergency fund of 3-6 months of expenses in cash, and high-interest debt such as credit cards paid off. Paying off a 20% card is a guaranteed 20% return.
Then choose a mix that matches your goals and nerves. A common simple approach is a "core and satellite" portfolio: a low-cost diversified core (for example Australian and global share ETFs plus some bonds) making up most of the money, with a smaller satellite of individual stocks you research.
Invest regularly, for example monthly (dollar-cost averaging), so you do not need to time the market. Rebalance once or twice a year back to your target mix. Write your plan down so you follow it when markets get scary.
Key takeaways
- Emergency fund and high-interest debt come first.
- Core-and-satellite: cheap diversified core, small stock-picking satellite.
- Invest regularly and rebalance on a schedule.
